If it feels like there are suddenly a lot more e-bikes and e-scooters zipping around the village this summer, you're not imagining it. Manotick has caught the same wave that's hit most of Ottawa — and Main Street, the multi-use pathways, and the sidewalks around the village are seeing a lot more of them than they used to.

Why Now

E-bikes and e-scooters have gotten cheaper, faster to charge, and a lot more common as a way to get around without a car — especially for shorter trips through the village or down to the river. For a lot of people, they're a genuinely practical way to get to Main Street shops or the farmers market without hunting for parking.

Where It Gets Messy

The friction shows up when riders and pedestrians end up sharing the same narrow stretch of sidewalk or pathway, especially around busy spots like Main Street on a market weekend. E-bikes and higher-powered e-scooters can move a lot faster than a regular bike, which doesn't leave much reaction time when a sidewalk is also full of people, strollers and dogs.

A Few Thoughts on Sharing the Space

Nobody's trying to ruin anyone's summer here. A little more attention to speed on the sidewalks and pathways — and choosing the road or a bike lane when one's available — goes a long way in a village this size, where a lot of these routes were built for walking pace, not scooter speed. As with anywhere in Ontario, e-scooter riders should also stay current on local rules around where they're permitted and what's required (helmets, age minimums, etc.), since regulations can vary and continue to evolve.

Have Your Say on September 17

If you want to weigh in, there's a community town hall on exactly this. Safe Rides. Strong Community. runs Thursday, September 17, 6:30–8:30 PM at the Manotick Arena, 5572 Doctor Leach Dr. Local police, community leaders and industry partners will cover safety, local bylaws and the responsible use of e-scooters, dirt bikes, ATVs and snowmobiles, with a Q&A and resources to take home.

Manotick's a walkable village — that's part of the appeal. Keeping it that way for both pedestrians and riders is worth a bit of everyone's patience.
