Most heritage sites are about the past. Watson's Mill is actually in the past — a working 1860s water-powered grist mill on the banks of the Rideau River, restored and grinding flour again for visitors. It's the centrepiece of Manotick, a National Historic Site of Canada, and one of the most genuinely interesting things you can do in south Ottawa.
And it's open every day. With free guided tours. For basically nothing.
What It Is
Built in 1860 by Moss Kent Dickinson and Joseph Currier, Watson's Mill is one of the last operating water-powered grist mills in Ontario. The original equipment and machinery are still in place and still in use. Every Sunday from 1–3pm, you can watch live milling demonstrations where wheat is ground into flour using the original millstones — stones that came all the way from France, each weighing 900kg.
It hasn’t run without a break, though. Commercial flour milling stopped in 1963, and the mill sat idle until the National Capital Commission restored it as a heritage site. It reopened as a museum in 1974, and the first flour since 1963 was ground at the 1975 Dickinson Days Festival and auctioned off for the occasion. Today’s milling is demonstration-scale, for visitors — though the mill still sells the stone-ground whole wheat flour it makes on site. Here’s how the whole village grew up around it.
Next door is Dickinson House, the 1867 heritage home of the mill's past owners, open to the public as a museum. The whole site — Watson's Mill, Dickinson House, and the Carriage Shed — sits at Dickinson Square right at the heart of the village.
Visiting
Entry is by donation — suggested $3 per person, free for kids under 12. Guided tours run every day of the week with costumed interpreters who actually know what they're talking about. The site is open May through October, 10am–5pm daily. Groups of 10 or more need to book in advance.
There's also a Used Book Store on site — open daily May through October — with gently used books at surprisingly good prices. It's one of those places you pop in for 5 minutes and leave an hour later.

If you've lived in Manotick and never done the tour, do the tour. If you have visitors coming from out of town, bring them here first. It's the kind of place that reminds you why this village is special.
